How To Clear A Clogged Drain Without Breaking Your Bank Or Your Sweat

Are your bathroom and kitchen sinks draining slowly? Is the water level in your shower rising to your ankles? You may need to clear the clog in your pipes. Before calling a plumber, there are several ways you can clear clogged drains.

1. Baking soda, vinegar, and other kitchen ingredients for clogged drains

Many people are familiar with baking soda and vinegar trick. Pour some hot water down the blocked drain. Next, add equal amounts of baking soda and vinegar (baking powder first), then cover the drain with a plug, if necessary. Finally, wait for the water to cool off. The chemical reaction is supposed to cause the obstruction to burst and then release pressure and corrosive energy. Experts disagree and say that the pressure generated does not affect obstruction as it can escape through the drain. According to them, the only thing that causes the clog is hot water. However, they recommend that baking soda be avoided in metallic pipes because it can corrode the surfaces. So use your best judgment.

Similar methods are:

Baking soda & salt - Pour equal amounts down your drain and let it sit for 20-30 minutes before adding hot water.

Vinegar, salt, and lemon - Combine equal amounts of vinegar and salt in a bowl. Next, add half of the lemon juice to the bowl. Finally, pour the mixture down your drain. Allow it to sit for between 20-30 minutes, then add hot water.

Salt and Hot Water - Pour at most a half cup of salt into your drain. Let it sit for between 20-30 minutes before adding more hot water.

Salt is used to unclog drains because of its abrasive properties and antiseptic qualities. It scrubs your pipes and absorbs bacteria.

Note: These methods will not work for clogs containing fat, oil, or grease (FOG). Hot water melts FOG. This clears the immediate clog but distributes the FOG and creates future problems.

Additional Note: Plastic pipes can be melted by boiling water.

2. Clothes hanger, Closet Auger or Drain Snake to Clear Clogged Drains

This trick may be familiar to you. You can use this trick to find the obstruction in your pipe by straightening a clothes hanger. You can purchase a closet auger or drain snake at your local hardware shop and use it in the same way. However, these tools are more flexible and can go further down the pipe.

3. Wet and dry vacuum for clogged drains

You can try to remove the obstruction using a dry and wet vacuum. You can simply set the vacuum to "wet" before turning it on.

Still no success? Drains that are clogged can be frustrating. Stay tuned for the next blog to learn more. TAPRON can help you if you need the services of a plumber.
